Profile: Ian is the younger brother of professional golfer David Howell. He began his career at Swindon Athletic where he scored the winning goal in a Wiltshire Senior Cup semi-final in the mid 1980's. Swindon Athletic were the club that amalgamated with Supermarine in 1992. Ian returned to Swindon and the club in the summer of 2004 from Weston-super-Mare as player/assistant manager to Mark Collier. Ian is a very experienced defender with a very good left foot and distributes well out of defence and has played the majority of his football since those early days in the Southern League, the most successful coming at Trowbridge Town where they reached the quarter finals of the FA Trophy. Along with Mark Collier he also coaches at Swindon Town and the last three seasons have seen a good managerial partnership develop with Mark. Ian has also gained his coaching badges which allowed him to coach and gain great experience in the USA during the summer of 2004. A knee injury curtailed his availability last season but once back to full fitness I'm sure he will be asked to come in for the odd game or two during this 2007/08 season.
