Time's up on Puffett's Hunts Copse reign...

After three years at the helm, Supermarine chairman Cliff Puffett is stepping down after Saturday's final game of the season at Banbury United. The 68-year-old has devoted around 12 years to the Hunts Copse side, including the past three seasons as chairman. But with the club assured of its Southern League Premier Division status next season, and financially secure off the pitch, he believes the time has come for someone who can take it to the next level.

Puffett admitted: "The last three years have been a monumental football journey for me and we've made great strides in that time. "I've always said that I want to get the club to Conference football. "We've reached the Southern League Premier Division and now we want to get to the summit. But it needs a younger person to take us there. "It's taken a lot of energy to progress, but it's been worth it.

"The three things we've set out to achieve, we have achieved - becoming established in the Southern League Premier Division, the acquisition of the ground, and planning permission to develop it." Puffett will remain in a president's role and will oversee the expansion of Marine's youth set-up and the club as a whole. He added: "I don't know of any other club in the area that is in as good a position as us both on and off the pitch. "I think it's a really attractive thing for someone to come in and have a look at. "There must be one or two on the horizon and the directors will be sorting that out. It just needs someone younger, more energetic and with a few more bob than me!"
