Skipper Kyle Lapham has warned his Supermarine teammates they cannot afford to
let their season fizzle out, or they could find themselves looking for a new
club in the summer. Marine have made giants strides in their first season in the
Premier Division, stringing together a nine match unbeaten run in February and
March, but one point from the last three outings has left them glancing
nervously over their shoulders.
Lapham, insists every squad member at Hunts Copse has the ability to play at
their current level, but warns performances must improve to persuade manager
Mark Collier they are worth their shirts in 2008/9. He said: "We are playing for
our places now, but then we have been all season. "If we want to be at the club
next year then everyone has to roll their socks up, including myself. "We should
be giving 100 per cent to win every game. That's what the manager asks and
that's what he expects. "I know Mark has ambitions for next season and so do the
players. "We want to establish ourselves in this league, but first we have to
prove we should be here next year."
Perched comfortably in mid-table, eight points above the drop zone, Marine would
appear to have already secured their Premier Division status, but Lapham warns
they cannot afford to take anything for granted. "Anything can happen between
now and the end of the season and if we don't pick up some more points we could
still get dragged into that group at the bottom," he said. "We don't want to
finish just one place above the relegation zone. That would not be a fair
reflection of what we have achieved in our first season in this division. We
want to come out with honours."
Marine travel to table toppers Halesowen Town tomorrow for a match which
represents their last chance to beat one of the division's big boys'. The South
Marston side have yet to register a single point against any of the teams in the
top five, a statistic Lapham is looking to change at Halesowen. He said:
"Beating one of the top sides is a box we still have to tick. "I think it just
comes down to experience in the end. At King's Lynn we had the better of the
first half, but they scored in the 47th minute and then heads dropped. "To lose
6-1 was not a nice feeling but you can't afford to dwell on it. We didn't and we
went on a big unbeaten run. " Cedric Abraham and Nathan Lightbody serve the last
games of their suspension tomorrow, while Jason Welch misses out with illness.
