Match Report Swindon Supermarine 2 Mangotsfield United 1 British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division Saturday 23.08.2008 Marine target double Bank Holiday joy By Gareth Moorhouse (Swindon Advertisier) Supermarine notched their first home win of the Southern League season and immediately set their sights on another three points at Banbury this afternoon. First-half goals from Danny Allen and Enoch Boateng helped Mark Collier’s men to a 2-1 triumph over plucky Mangotsfield in a game that yielded plenty of chances.
Indeed it was nothing like the bore draw the two sides contested at Hunts Copse last season, and Marine could easily have scored several more goals in the closing stages. Steve Cook, Ashley Edenborough and Nick Stanley were all guilty of missing good chances as the Mangotsfield back line came under increasing pressure. Despite his side’s profligacy in front of goal, Collier insisted he was more than satisfied with the result.
“It was three points, and that was the main objective at the start of the game,” he said. “We came under some pressure at the start of the second half, but I thought we finished the match strongly. |

“The scoreline could have been much bigger in our favour if we had taken all the chances we created. “But we certainly looked very good going forward. If we keep creating chances like that we will give ourselves plenty of opportunities to win football matches.” Allen put the hosts ahead after 39 minutes with a deft glancing header from Chris Taylor’s in-swinging corner.
Marine doubled their advantage before the break with a classic counter-attacking strike. Kyle Lapham intercepted the ball inside his own half and released the lively Cook, whose centre picked out Boateng for a simple finish. An error from goalkeeper Matt Bulman threw Mangotsfield a lifeline after 54 minutes. Bulman misjudged the bounce of the ball and Tom Collett stroked the ball into an unguarded net.
Mangotsfield always looked dangerous from set-pieces, but Marine continued to play on the counter, and should have added to their tally before the final whistle. With six points from their opening three fixtures, the South Marston side are high on confidence heading into the Bank Holiday Monday clash at Banbury United. “We lost a rather meaningless game at Banbury on the final day of last season, but I’m sure both teams will be up for this one,” said Collier.
“They are unbeaten so far with a win and two draws, but we have more points than them after our two victories. “Victories are everything in this division and we will certainly be positive and look to pick up another one on Monday.”
