Match Report Swindon Supermarine 1 Hemel Hempstead Town 4 Saturday 08.11.08
Few complaints as Marine finally lose Mark Collier had few complaints as Swindon Supermarine’s eight-match British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division unbeaten run was emphatically ended by Hemel Hempstead Town - except one. The Hunts Copse chief felt the 4-1 scoreline was a harsh reflection on his side’s efforts, but admitted their performance had slipped below the standards set so far this season as they ended the day in third spot. |

Marine’s unbeaten league run stretched back to August 30 - when ironically they also lost 4-1 at home, to Corby - and had carried them to the top of the table. And a philosophical Collier - who had stated Marine were underdogs prior to the game, despite topping the league - admitted: “We’re disappointed because we’re not used to losing. “We don’t like that feeling and that’s what we’ve got to take forward now.’’ He added: “We didn’t play particularly well. We fell below our standards of late and if you do that against sides in this league, you will get punished. We need ‘eight-out-of-10 performances week in, week out, although I felt the score was a bit flattering. “But they (Hemel) were better on the day. At 2-1 down, we changed things and chased it and got picked off at the other end.’’ Marine went in to the break at 1-1, thanks to what Collier described as their one true moment of quality in the match.
Drew Roberts gave the visitors the lead on 18 minutes after Adam Martin had pulled the ball back from the by-line. But it was all square five minutes before half-time as Justyn McKay took aim from 35 yards out and found the top corner in stunning style. Marine’s Alan Griffin and Hemel’s Roberts traded further chances, but the away side were ahead again five minutes after half-time. Martin was felled in the box by Ashley Edenborough and Roberts converted the penalty for the Tudors.
A feisty period of the match then saw Hemel’s Martin sent off for a second bookable offence and Marine stepped up their efforts for the equaliser. Instead, prompted by the probing of Steve Wales, Town sealed victory with two quick-fire late goals. His cross found sub Paul Edgeworth’s diving header at the far post for 3-1, then he teed up Edgeworth again and a further pass allowed another replacement, Chris Herron, to add the fourth.
Collier now hopes his men can lift themselves for back-to-back away appointments at Bashley tomorrow and Oxford City on Saturday. The manager, who expects to have Joe Harris (suspension) and Kyle Lapham (dead leg) back, added: “It’s been a great unbeaten run and we’ve been in some big company at the top. “It’s about getting back on the horse now because there are two more tough games coming up.’’ |
