City see off flagging Marine

By Ned Payne » Swindon Advertiser

Supermarine continued to struggle under the pressure of a busy fixture list as they were defeated 2-0 at home to promotion chasers Cambridge City in the Southern League. City took the lead on 14 minutes when Neil Midgley sent Matt Bulman the wrong way from the spot, after the goalkeeper had chopped down Michael Frew.

Alan Griffin pulled wide Marine's only effort of the half on 24 minutes before Frew foxed Bulman with a delightful lob from 30 yards. The visitors were fortunate not to be down to 10 men when Scott Neilson was only shown a yellow card by referee Adam Nunn, after he appeared to head-butt a Marine player.

Dave Theobald could have made the Cambridge lead even greater just before half time, but he headed over at the back post. Marine's best chance of the night came five minutes after the resumption when Chris Taylor struck against the top of the bar from the edge of the area. Steve Gentle hooked spectacularly over the bar for the Lilywhites and Bulman saved a second attempt at a lob from Frew. Substitute Luke Hopper headed off-target and Sam Morris shot into the arms of Zac Barrett late on as the hosts failed to register.

Marine boss Mark Collier said afterwards: "With the amount of games that have come you can see what's going on. When you're one down it's so hard to drag yourself back up. "We felt a little hard-done by tonight. Their lad's head-butted one of our players and stayed on the pitch. "A little break, he gets sent off. You're playing against 10 and it can all be different."
