Supermarine let two Southern League points slip as they could only manage a goal-less draw at Yate Town Tuesday night. Mark Collier’s troops are now without a win in four league games and they rarely looked like breaking through against a poor home side. Entertainment was low on the agenda from the start with Ash Edenborough coming closest to breaking the deadlock on nine minutes when his over-the-shoulder volley dropped just over the bar. Yate had only two shots from range to show for a 10-minute purple patch, Edd Vahid and Matt Beadle shooting well off target. Edenborough skewed wide and Danny Allen sliced past the left upright in the only other genuine opportunities of the first half.

The second period began promisingly when Aaron Blakemore’s flying header brought the best out of Matt Bulman in the Supermarine goal. But matters soon reverted to the drabness of the first half. Justyn McKay scuffed a daisy cutter wide from range on 55 minutes and Blakemore shot woefully wide at the other end. Alan Griffin went close in a scramble on 67 minutes and Yate’s Mike Whittingham side-footed a free kick wide when unmarked, but there was little other decent action.

Disappointed Marine boss Collier admitted afterwards: “All I can say is, I’m glad I didn’t pay to get in. “It’s not good enough. No disrespect to Yate, but if we’ve got any ambitions of being in the higher parts of the league, the top end of the table, then we have to come and beat teams like them. “We haven’t looked like that today. We just haven’t had that little bit of guile to break them down. “The positive is defensively we looked quite sound and they haven’t been a threat to us.’’

From a Yate perspective...

A strong, blustery wind combined with a hard pitch and two strong defences meant that goal scoring chances were at a premium. We suffered a blow during the pre match warm up when keeper Lee Matthews aggravated a groin strain and was replaced by Reserve Team keeper Adam Growcott who made his first team debut.

Both sides created some half chances during the first half, most of which came from dead ball situations, but none were converted.

Early in the second period we almost took the lead when Aron Robbins made ground down the left and crossed for Aaron Blakemore whose diving header brought an excellent instinctive save from Matt Bulman.

Later in the half there was a tremendous goalmouth scramble at the other end during which a couple of attempts were blocked and Growcott also distinguished himself with a brave save. These were the closest the sides came to scoring, and a draw was probably the fairest result. Only time will tell if this was a case of one point gained or two dropped!
