Uxbridge 1 Swindon Supermarine 6 FA Trophy 2nd Round Tuesday 13.01.2009 Six-shooters Marine set up Ebbsfleet tie By Anthony Marshall » Swindon Advertiser Swindon Supermarine booked a third round trip to holders Ebbsfleet in the FA Trophy as opponents Uxbridge imploded in astonishing fashion. Goals from Steve Cook (2), Danny Allen, Alan Griffin, Luke Hopper and Ashley Edenborough sent Mark Collier’s men sauntering through 6-1 while their Middlesex hosts self-destructed spectacularly; having THREE men sent off in the first half. The opening 24 minutes were notable for bookings for Uxbridge skipper Mark Nicholls and striker Johnnie Dyer before mayhem ensued.
Nicholls saw red and, as the flurry of cards continued, Marine’s Garry Horgan and the home side’s Kevin Warner were shown yellows. Allen added goals to the mounting match statistics as he gave Marine the lead on 28 minutes and, four minutes later, Griffin added a second to leave Marine coasting. Another four minutes later Cook ended the match as a contest with the third and, in first-half stoppage time, Uxbridge lost the plot.
Mark Dennison was shown a straight red by Woking referee Lee Collins for a two-footed challenge, before home boss Tony Choules was sent to the stands for his protests. There was still time for Dyer to join his two teammates for an early bath after his second yellow before the half-time whistle. The rout continued after the break as Edenborough made it four for Marine on 57 minutes. It was five soon after as Hopper netted and Cook brought up the half dozen with his second of the night before Uxbridge’s consolation.
Delighted Marine boss Mark Collier said: “I said we knew what to expect from them and it was exactly that. “But we kept our concentration and did a great job.’’ Ebbsfleet came from behind to beat Stalybridge 2-1 and book a meeting with Marine on January 31. |
