Match Report Tiverton Town 1 Swindon Supermarine 1 British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division Saturday 20.09.2008 By Anthony Marshall (Swindon Advertiser)
Mark Collier was left to rue a series of missed chances as Supermarine had to settle for a point at Tiverton, which kept up their remarkable away form in the league. A penalty from Mark Draycott midway through the first half was no less than Marine deserved for their endeavours, but Tom Knighton levelled things up for the hosts before the break. Supermarine had more than enough chances to grab all three points but a combination of missed chances and some great saves from former Swindon Town keeper Steve Book, in the Tivvy goal, meant Collier’s men dropped their first points of the season on their travels.
However they remain unbeaten as an away side, and stay fourth in the BGB Premier Division, and Collier revealed he was pleased with his side’s efforts despite not getting the win they deserved. |

“It was a decent point but I’m a little disappointed not to get more. “It’s a long old journey down there to Tiverton and it can be hard on the lads with the coach journey. But we started brightly and played particularly well and passed the ball how we wanted to.
“Once we had scored we looked like we could go on to score more and win the game, but we let them score right before half-time, and when you switch off at this level, even for a second, teams like Tiverton will punish you.
“It’s nice to be this far into the season and still to be unbeaten away from home. Tiverton are a difficult club to go to, and it can be hard when you have to meet up at 10.30am and then travel miles and miles on the coach. But we seem to prepare ourselves well and have a mind set that we’re very difficult to break down away from home.”
Collier stuck to his promise to make changes from last week’s embarrassing FA Cup exit at Thatcham, and strikers Luke Hopper and Steve Cook made way for Draycott and Alan Griffin. Griffin, returning after five weeks out with a fractured cheekbone, missed a good chance to open the scoring before Draycott headed Nick Stanley’s left-wing cross over.
Marine finally made the breakthrough in the 33rd minute when Draycott was brought down inside the area, and the front man picked himself up to stroke home the resulting penalty. However their lead was short lived as, four minutes before the break, Knighton latched onto Mark Saunders’ pass, turned and fired in from close range to equalise for Tiverton.
Supermarine dominated the second half and Book made a superb save from Chris Taylor’s free-kick, while Draycott missed the target from long range and substitute Cook shot straight at Book late on as they failed to get ahead again.
