Marine boss still playing it cool!

By Gareth Moorhouse

Mark Collier insists his side are punching “well above our weight” after Supermarine maintained their unbeaten away record in the Southern Premier with a staggering 3-0 success at Brackley. Mark Draycott’s brace and a late strike from Alan Griffin lifted Marine to the dizzy heights of third after Saturday’s final whistle, but Collier says nobody at Hunts Copse is getting carried away.

“We will just keep going quietly about our business,” he said. “When you look at some of the big clubs at the top of the table, we are punching well above our weight. “But obviously we are determined to enjoy it while we can. “If we could just reproduce our away form at home then things would be looking even better for us.”

Marine started Saturday’s game as huge underdogs against a big-spending Brackley outfit who included former Swindon striker Tony Thorpe in their ranks. But it was the visitors who bossed the proceedings, as the back four of Kyle Lapham, Leigh Henry, Chris Thompson and Danny Allen laid the foundations for the perfect counter-attacking performance. Brackley enjoyed plenty of early possession, but it was Marine celebrating at half time after Draycott's 42nd minute opener.

A typically swift break from the back saw the ball fall to Nick Stanley to collect the ball wide on the left, and his inch perfect cross to the far post was nodded home by Draycott from six yards. The visitors doubled their lead just seven minutes into the second half, Draycott reacting first after Nick Stanley’s free-kick was only parried by Richard Knight the Brackley goalkeeper.

Stanley and Alan Griffin both spurned good chances to add a third before the latter wrapped up the points eight minutes from time. Substitute Steve Cook beat the offside trap and drew the goalkeeper before unselfishly sliding a pass for Griffin to slot home into an unguarded net from five yards.

“It was a very pleasing win, and a nice journey home,” said Collier afterwards. “We did our homework on Brackley and we set the team up in a certain way, and it paid off. “The back four were magnificent, and that allowed us to play on the counter. “We’ve got Yate Town at home on Wednesday night, so it would be nice to reproduce the performance and the result.”
