Classy Marine

Supermarine’s recent run of
good results continued last night as a late Joe Harris
goal gave Mark Collier’s side a 2-1 home victory against
Tiverton Town in the Southern League. Harris’s deflected
free kick in second-half stoppage time saw Marine grab
three points at the death, but the hosts had the
majority of the play throughout and were good value for
their win.
Steve Cook had given
Collier’s men an early advantage, nodding home Ash
Edenborough’s cross from close range.
But Tiverton hauled
themselves back into the contest during a 20 minute
purple patch towards the end of the first period and Sam
Mamson levelled the affair, tapping home from 10 yards
with Matty Bulman stranded.
Marine suffered an early
setback, losing Gary Horgan after a quarter of an hour,
but Sean Wood deputised confidently, securing the
holding role in front of the back four. In tricky,
slippery conditions, Justyn McKay and Chris Taylor
passed with composure in the middle of the park and, but
for a couple of tremendous saves from Tivvy stopper
Steve Book, the scoreline could well have read heavily
in Marine’s favour.
After the game Collier
revealed his relief at the late winner. “At times like
that we needed that little bit of luck and tonight we
got it,” he said. “I must admit I didn’t fancy Joe
Harris for the free kick but he’s put it away nicely.
“It means we can go to Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday full
of confidence.”
