Stanley double sets up
Marine win
By Ned Payne » Swindon
Advertiser
A
manful performance saw Swindon Supermarine come from
behind to beat fellow Southern League Premier Division
relegation battlers Bedford Town 2-1 at the New Eyrie on
Monday night.
Bedford had taken the lead
in front of 170-plus spectators just after the half
hour, when a slick passing move resulted in the
unlocking of the Marine defence, and hitman Junior
McDougal was on hand to supply the finish.
But Marine came up with the
best possible reply to the setback as forward Nick
Stanley (pictured) levelled the game just three minutes
later. The visitors broke up a Bedford attack and
countered through striker Ashan Holgate, and the
ex-Swindon Town man found Stanley, who turned and fired
into the net for a stylish equaliser.
Several minutes into the
second half Marine got what ultimately proved to be the
winner, with Stanley once again the goal-scorer. Ash
Edenborough beat the Bedford full-back and his cross
into the middle was side-footed home by the in form
winger to the joy of the visiting bench, and the
disappointment of the vocal home support.
The result meant that
Supermarine picked up their second away victory in eight
days, having not previously won away from Hunts Copse in
the league since the beginning of December. Manager Mark
Collier was in buoyant mood after the game.
The Hunts Copse chief told
the Swindon Advertiser: “To go to your relegation rivals
and win was worth more than the three points really.
“You want to beat teams down there with you and we’ve
still got games in hand.
He added: “Just weeks ago
Bedford drew 2-2 with Farnborough so a win is all we
could ask for. “The good thing is that winning games
just takes a bit of the pressure off us.”
