RESERVES MATCH REPORT
Supermarine Reserves 0-0 Abingdon Town Hellenic Reserve Division One ~ Monday 5th April 2010 By Mike Coxhead Supermarine reserves headed into this Bank Holiday fixture looking to extend their unbeaten run to six games. From the start Supermarine were on the back foot and having to really dig in deep to keep the Abingdon forwards at bay but we gradually got into the game.
The first chance of the game came after 20 minutes from a Marine corner when James Keller’s cross was met by Scott Scanlon's header and the Abingdon keeper had to make a really good save to stop Marine from going one up. Following this chance Marine had several more but forwards Dan Hall and Mark Barnes could not find their shooting boots.
Abingdon really should have turned the game on its head when a midfield player ran through on goal and rounded keeper Luke Adams but his shot was cleared off the line by defender John Turner.
Marine had a dressing down by manager Ken Turner at half time and the second half started with a change for Marine when Gary Cook replaced Rob McKinley.
Marine started to dictate the game and the midfield came alive with Cook and Blackford getting more into the game and got stuck into everything in the middle of the park, where in the first half they were completely over run. From the start of the half Marine had chances, with both Barnes and Hall going close. Hall coming the closest when a superb long range shot on the turn saw the Abingdon 'keeper make only his second save of the game. From this resulting corner Scanlon got to the ball first only to see his attempt go wide of the post. Turner then brought on forward Ben Read and with his first touch had a really good shot which only just went wide.
'Marines continued to press for the goal and looked the more likely of the two teams to score but the central defensive pair of Abingdon done really well looked very composed, dealing with everything that Marine threw at them.
With just minutes to go a change in formation for Marine saw Andrew McKinley go up front and support the pairing of Barnes and Hall. Having won a corner with just seconds remaining Marine thought they had a penalty when the Abingdon defender looked to have his hands all around McKinley but referee Leggett ignored the appeals and the game ended 0-0. Team: Adams, Turner, A.McKinley, Scanlon, Mooney, Povey, Keller, Blackford, R.McKinley (Cook), Barnes, Hall (Reed), Marine Man of the Match: Craig Mooney
