MATCH REPORT: Swindon Supermarine Ladies V Swindon Town Ladies
A nervous looking Town Ladies failed to make any impression into Marine half in the opening 20minutes, Marine winger S.Smith was a constant threat down the right wing. The first real chance fell to Town when a corner taken by Reid was met by Town captain Reeves, but under pressure headed wide. Marine’s, K.Smith, Levitt and Rich controlled the midfield. With the game starting to open up Marine were looking the more likely to score and it was no surprise that in the 40th minute a superbly taken corner by Martin was met by the unmarked Marine captain Brown who powered her header past the Town keeper Chapman.
The second half continued with Marine in control and the back four of Quinn, Brown, Long and Curtain always remained on top of their game. Town's first chance of the second half came from a free kick on the edge of the box but Reid blasted over the bar. With some tired legs in the Marine midfield starting to show it was a relief when Marine won a free kick in the 70th minute just about 25 yards from goal. Up stepped Rich to fire a superb and unstoppable shot over Town keeper Chapman to give Marine a deserved 2-0 lead. It wasn’t until the 80th minute that Town had their first direct shot on goal. The effort came from Town midfielder Wheatley and only a superb one handed save by Marine keeper Steinhart kept the game at 2-0. That lifted Town spirits who began to pressurise the Marine goal but failed to find a way through.
Quote from Manager Dave Smith It has been an unbelievable second season together. This result has caped it off to comprehensively beat a team three leagues above us and with half the Marine squad only 16 to 17 years of age I feel the club has a promising future ahead. I would also like to thank our sponsors the Window Factory for their support and everyone connected to the club.
