MARINE
START TO AIM HIGH
Supermarine’s steady improvement in the Southern Premier
League has left manager Mark Collier adjusting his
sights towards the top end of the division. A Ben Wells
strike secured a 1-1 draw with Windsor & Eton at the
Webb’s Wood Stadium on Saturday, extending Marine’s
unbeaten run to nine in all competitions in the process.
And, although Collier was a little frustrated not to
have taken all three points from the contest, he is
beginning to talk of higher aspirations in South
Marston.
“I was
disappointed not to have got the win. We had enough of
the possession and played well enough to win the game,”
he said. “But that shows how far we’ve come as a club
recently. It’s nine undefeated, and at this level that
is always good.” Collier believes a little extra
discipline and a more clinical final touch could well
help his outfit into the upper bracket of teams in the
Southern Premier.
Although he bemoaned the fortunate nature of Windsor’s
equaliser, the Marine boss saw enough positives to be
persuaded his crop of players have all the early
hallmarks of a successful side. “It was a pretty
fortuitous goal that they managed,” he said. “It’s a
long ball over the top which has gone past everyone and
that was disappointing. “And it was also disappointing
not to get into half time 1-0 up.
“If we
want to compete with some of the top teams in this
league, we have to make sure we turn teams over when we
get in those kind of positions. “But the performance
levels were good again, as they have been for a while,
and we’ve become a difficult team to beat.”
Wells
handed the hosts the advantage on 21 minutes, striking
low from 20 yards out to beat visiting keeper Delroy
Preddie with a smart finish. However, the Berkshire side
did not lie down for the slaughter, despite having found
themselves under the cosh for much of the game’s opening
quarter, and found their way back onto even terms when
David Pearce connected well to fire past Mark Scott in
the home goal.
With
few options on the bench, due to the absence through
injury, illness, suspension and work of Steve Cook,
Chris Allen, Dave Bampton and Ashan Holgate, Collier was
unable to call on an extra spark to turn one point into
three. Nevertheless, he praised his slightly depleted
squad for stepping up to the plate and dominating
another 90 minutes of Southern League football.
“They
did well, they all did,” he said. “It was a shame we
didn’t have the power on the bench that perhaps we would
have liked, but there was nothing there which we really
thought could come on and make a big difference. “Ben
(Wells) came in and did very well for Chris Allen, and
showed what he can do. “We could have taken a few more
chances, but it was a good performance.”
