Soft goals cost Marine
Mark Collier has urged his
side to tighten up at the back following Swindon
Supermarine’s 3-1 home defeat against Hemel Hempstead.
Despite a bright start, which saw Supermarine hit the
crossbar, the home side conceded two sloppy goals in
quick succession midway through the half. Although
Collier admits his side bounced back well after the
break to get back into the match, the Supermarine boss
knows his side are capable of better.
“We are better than that,”
said Collier. “You cannot concede three goals at this
level and expect to win matches.
We
gave away two sloppy goals and too many players did not
produce what they are capable of. “But it’s not panic
stations - it’s early in the season and I’m sure they’ll
bounce back with a better performance against Weymouth
on Thursday night.”
New signing between the
posts, Mark Scott endured a shaky start to life as a
Supermarine player losing his footing to concede a
long-range opener and allowing a cross-cum-shot to loop
over him into the net. However, the on-loan Swindon Town
goalkeeper, bounced back to show his class making some
impressive saves to limit the damage.
Things
didn’t start well for Marine when they lost David
Bampton to a hamstring injury on 15 minutes and visiting
Hemel took full advantage when Bruce Wilson’s
speculative 35-yard effort caught out the off balance
Scott on 25 minutes. Hemel doubled their lead by
Lafayette, on 36 minutes when a cross-cum-shot eluded
Scott.
Supermarine then lost Sam
Morris who, like Bampton, suffered a hamstring injury at
half-time and after the break it was Hemel who came out
the strongest. Aston Goss caused numerous problems for
Marine’s back four while some nice build up play between
Danny May and Scott Thomas saw Danny May hit the bar.
However, Supermarine
refused to lay
down
and die, getting back into the match on 80 minutes. Good
work down the left from Nick Stanley saw him pick out
Chris Allen with the cross who finished smartly into the
bottom corner. With Marine pushing for an equaliser,
Hemel eventually caught them on the break when
substitute Ryan Blake’s tapped home from close range to
wrap up proceedings.
“I’m obviously disappointed
with the result but I’m pleased with how we bounced back
in the second half,” reflected Collier. “Losing Bampton
and Morris didn’t help us and to be fair Hemel have
scored two quite speculative goals with the first and
third efforts. “Mark Scott will be disappointed with the
goals but he is a top keeper and proved that with some
other fine saves during the match.
