Match Report by Steve Butt (Swindon Advertiser)

Swindon Supermarine "gutted" after last-gasp goal Ten-man Swindon Supermarine were left “gutted” last night after losing to a dramatic Hednesford winner four minutes into injury time.

Having had Dave Bampton red carded for two bookable offences in the first half, Supermarine battled back and looked certain to grab a share of the points.

However, deep into injury time in the Southern League Premier Division clash, the 10-men failed to clear their lines and could do nothing to stop Kyle Patterson’s strike elude goalkeeper James Rae. Joint caretaker boss Gary Horgan said his side were devastated to concede so late.

“We are gutted,” said Horgan. "Obviously we were down to 10 men but we regrouped and we had fought back and got back into the match. “In my opinion we were the better side in the end. If you were watching the game you wouldn’t have realised we were down to 10 men. “We had several chances before we equalised and then John Beeden has scored. “After that it was pretty even but I thought we’d done enough for a point. “I guess the tiredness told because we only half cleared our lines and their lad has picked the ball up, shot and it’s bounced over James Rae.”

Chris Clements had put Hednesford ahead on 29 minutes after scoring from a free-kick conceded by Bampton. The Supermarine man was booked for the incident and then received his second yellow card immediately after the goal for dissent. After Supermarine adjusted to being a man down, Ashan Holgate and Leigh Henry both went close before Beeden equalised for Marine - following up a rebound from his own shot.

Match Report from a Hednesford perspective...

Patterson rocket fires Pitmen to victory

A 92nd minute strike from Kyle Patterson ensured Hednesford Town kept the pressure on the sides above them in the playoff places following a hard earned 2-1 victory against a determined Swindon Supermarine side on Wednesday evening.

The home side had the early pressure and Hednesford had goalkeeper Dan Crane to thank for keeping them level when he denied striker Ashan Holgate from point-blank range on ten minutes. Following a number of debatable decision’s against both sides by the referee, Pitman assistant manager Larry Chambers was dismissed from the dugout for something he said to the official.

In the 28th minute Hednesford took the lead though. Midfielder Ross Davidson’s burst forward was unceremoniously halted by Dave Bampton, for which the Supermarine player received a yellow card. Chris Clements stepped up and curled a 25-yard free-kick low into the far corner of the net with the ball taking a slight deflection on its way towards goal. As the players were walking back to the halfway line Bampton was shown a second yellow card and dismissed after he continued to chastise the referee for the awarding of the free-kick.

On 37 minutes Hednesford almost doubled their lead when a corner was played short to Alex Melbourne, his ball into the box was met by the onrushing Jay Denny and his header seemed destined for the back of the net only for Swindon keeper James Rae to pull off a wonder save to keep it 1-0.

The Pitmen were once again slow out of the blocks at the start of the second period and had an early let-off when defender Leigh Henry headed over when unmarked at the back post. Four minutes into the second half and the home side did draw themselves level when halftime substitute Jon Beeden poked the ball home after seeing his initial shot cleared away off the line.

Despite the man advantage the Pitmen were finding their opponents hard to breakdown, although they nearly retook the lead on 71 minutes when Darren Campion saw his left-footed free-kick go narrowly wide of the upright.

The final ten minutes saw Town pushing Swindon further and further back but it looked as if it was going to be one of those nights with substitute Danny Quinn and Patterson only having a couple of half chances to put the Pitmen back in front. Just as it seemed the game was heading for a draw Patterson picked the ball up some 30-yards out and drove forward before unleashing a 25-yard effort which flew past home keeper Rae and into the bottom corner of the net, leading to joyous scenes from players and supporters alike.
