Collier salutes Marine's
resolve
Manager
Mark Collier was keen to put Saturday’s FA Cup stalemate
with non-league giants Bath City into perspective, after
his side defied the odds to hold the Blue Square Premier
outfit to a 0-0 draw.
Marine had few genuine
opportunities to dump out their opponents and secure
themselves a place in the first round proper, but a mean
defensive performance at the Webb‘s Wood Stadium,
coupled with the visitors’ profligacy, saw them set up a
replay at Twerton Park tomorrow. And Collier said
afterwards:
“I think a lot of people
will be surprised we managed to hold a decent Conference
team to a 0-0 draw. “We’ve done well this season and
been competitive but we‘re not top of our league, and
we’re playing against a team who are playing big
non-league clubs week in, week out.
“They
have got lots of quality round the pitch and have got
players that have played at a very good standard in the
Football League, so overall we have to be happy. “The
players are fully aware we were playing a team two
divisions above us and we have to keep stressing that to
people. “We’re a young football club playing against a
team dining at the top table of non-league football, and
we stood toe-to-toe with them and did very well.”
Marine made a positive
start to Saturday’s clash but it was the visitors who
looked the more likely to break the deadlock, when they
forced their way into the game midway through the half.
Ex-Bristol City man Scott Murray turned Matt Robinson
inside out but sliced wide at the near post, before Lee
Phillips had a tap-in disallowed for offside just before
the break. Phillips should have headed City in front
after the resumption and Marc Canham and Alex Russell
also went close, before opportunities began to diminish.
Marine were put under a lot of pressure in the final
stages but withstood the onslaught to set up a replay on
City’s own patch.
