Swindon Supermarine have three reasons to smile

Goalscorer Steve Cook who grabbed the opener on 44 minutesSwindon Supermarine three reasons to celebrate at the weekend as they comfortably beat Banbury and re-signed two of their former players. The Webb’s Wood side were 3-0 winners over the visiting Puritans in the Southern Premier courtesy of goals from Steve Cook (pictured), Gary Horgan and Ben Wells, moving them up to 10th in the table. And the victory was sweetened further by the news that wide man Joe Harris had rejoined the club after returning to the UK following a spell in Australia and Jon Beeden who came off the bench to play a part in the win over Banbury returned to the club after playing a game for the club last season against Hednesford Town.

On a heavy pitch, Marine had a goal disallowed for offside in the fourth minute after Sam Morris headed in Nick Stanley’s cross. The deadlock was broken just before the break when Jamie Gosling’s shot was parried to Cook by Banbury stopper Joe Murrell, and the striker headed into the net. Soon after the restart the lead was doubled when the outstanding Gary Horgan robbed an opposition player in midfield and unleashed a thunderous left-footed shot into the top corner. Gosling and Cook both hit the woodwork before Wells, playing centre-midfield following the departure of Chris Taylor, converted substitute Luke Hopper’s pass in the 76th minute. “Banbury have some up and down results but they are always well-organised and difficult to break down,” said Marine boss Mark Collier, whose side have now tasted victory in six of their last seven league games. “We had good possession and by their manager’s admission we deserved to win.”
