Match Report from the Swindon Advertiser

Marine beaten at Salisbury

Supermarine went down 2-0 to table-topping Salisbury City in their Southern Premier League clash last night. Having held the home side for the first 45 minutes, Marine were unable to withstand Salisbury pressure after the break - conceding twice in the second half to leave south Wiltshire pointless.

Joint player-boss Gary Horgan was delighted with the way in which his team defended against their promotion-chasing hosts, but admitted the South Marston outfit were a little lacking in other areas on the night. “It was a tight game and I was a little disappointed we didn’t get a point,” he said. “We couldn’t have asked for more from the boys, one through 11, in the way we defended, but our ball retention needed to be a bit better. “Their chances were all pretty much scrambled ones, but we didn’t do enough at times to keep the ball. “Maybe at the end the result was fair, but we did defend very well.”

Jake Reid grabbed the opening goal for the Whites, latching on to player-manager Darrell Clarke’s through ball to slot home neatly 10 minutes after half time. And with less than quarter-of-an-hour remaining Kayne McLaggon took down a Chris Sheppard long ball to calmly fire the second of the night for the league leaders.

After the game, Horgan revealed the club’s attempts to bring Bradley Gray to the Webb’s Wood from Forset Green Rovers were stifled at the last minute, but Marine still hope to bring fresh faces in before the loan window closes. “We had hoped to bring Bradley to the club because he was registered with us, but when we got to the final stages we found out he’d signed a contract with them,” said Horgan. “We can now look to get him in on loan but anything that is done has to be done in the next day because of the seven days’ notice. “But we are looking to get someone in before then.”
