All good things come to an end

By Ned Payne »

Swindon Supermarine’s recent good form in the Southern League Premier Division deserted them on Saturday as they were edged out 2-1 at lowly Oxford City.

The Webb’s Wood side had won seven of their previous eight league games before the weekend, but an early header from Craig McIlwain and a 70th-minute effort from Adam Mekki rendered Sam Morris’ strike in between meaningless.

“It wasn’t the Supermarine that’s been on the pitch the last two months,” admitted Marine boss Mark Collier. “We didn’t start the game well and we failed to pick it up. It was a flat performance. “We lacked a bit of inspiration and we were very disappointed because we went there in good form. “As I reminded the players before the game you can lose form very quickly and that’s what happened. “All good runs come to an end, we’ve just got to go on another one now.”

Liam Malone spurned an early opportunity for the hosts before McIlwain opened the scoring, when a corner by Dave Savage was headed on by Wayne Blossom and McIlwain nodded home. Supermarine had several chances in the first half with left-back Danny Allen driving wide, while Luke Hopper saw his strike palmed away by Swindon Town stopper Jakub Jesionkowski. Striker Steve Cook then showed neat footwork to force himself into a shooting position, but his final effort let him down.

The visitors equalised in the 54th minute when Morris netted his fourth goal in six games, the midfielder seizing on a through-ball before directing past Jesionkowski. But the hosts’ determination paid off when they re-took the lead in controversial fashion midway through the second period. Adam Mekki turned in James Clarke’s cross to bag his first goal for City, and although Supermarine’s players appealed for offside, the goal stood.

City’s Jack Ashton was sent off for his second bookable offence in the closing stages but the home side held on for their first league win since mid-November.
