As Reported By Sam Morshead
» Swindon Advertiser just after the final whistle...
Colchester United 1 Swindon
Supermarine 0
Swindon Supermarine’s FA
Cup adventure is over after Mark Collier’s valiant side
lost their second round tie 1-0 to Colchester at the
Weston Homes Community Stadium. The Essex side’s only
goal came on 21 minutes when David Mooney tucked home
Ashley Vincent’s cross from close range, but Marine
showed ambition and determination and more than matched
their opponents from four leagues above. Before Mooney
opened the scoring Chris Allen had a glorious chance to
give the Southern League underdogs the lead, but the
midfielder dragged his shot wide from 10 yards out when
played in by Ben Wells. And after the break the visitors
played some exceptional football, creating chances for
Jamie Gosling, who struck an upright, and Wells, who
fired at home keeper Ben Williams. The South Marston
club can take great pride from the way in which they
composed themselves against a promotion-chasing team in
League One.
Here are the key moments
from today's game:
Pre-match: This is
exactly the kind of tie the FA Cup is all about. The
Supermarine fans, who include a Teletubbie and a handful
of Santa's amongst their ranks, are in full voice and
drowning the home crowd. Mark Collier runs the breadth
of the pitch to applaud the travelling support and they
erupt in appreciation. A really special atmosphere
considering it’s a fairly sparse audience at the Weston
Homes Community Stadium.

1 min: An early
moment of nerves for Marine as Ashley Vincent breaks
down the right and his deep cross narrowly evades David
Mooney at the back post. Scare over, time for the
visitors to settle into the occasion.
3 mins: A long ball
catches Matt Robinson out, as the full-time policeman
leaves the bouncing ball, letting it run into Vincent’s
path. Vincent fires low at goal from 10 yards out but
Will Puddy is equal to it and holds on well for his
first save of the afternoon.
7
mins: Every time Leigh Henry gets a touch of the
ball half-a-dozen female voices whoop and cheer
hysterically. Lucky man? You decide. A very good save
from Puddy denies Paul Reid at the back post after the
centre-back leaps well to meet Brian Wilson’s clipped
free-kick and heads low, only for the Marine stopper to
push it over.
11 mins: Lovely
stuff from Jamie Gosling to open up space behind
Colchester. The former Yeovil Town man turns nicely in
midfield, exchanges passes with Ashan Holgate and bursts
into the box. In the end, his shot is blocked away to
safety by Pat Baldwin, but that brief moment shows
Marine can compete with their hosts this afternoon.
14 mins: Panic at
the back for the U’s whose keeper, Ben Williams, almost
gifts the non-leaguers the opening goal. Williams
dallies on a back-pass and Gosling and Ben Wells force
him into a poor clearance which dribbles to Holgate on
the edge of the area, but the former Swindon Town front
man can’t find Wells with a chipped centre.
15 mins: Wilson
dinks a lovely little cross into the area, and Mooney
beats Lapham to the ball, but nods wide. Colchester’s
fans are growing restless. Marine are battling
brilliantly and more than matching their hosts.
18 mins: Mooney
dances through the Marine midfield and feeds Kayode
Odejayi. The big hitman scored a famous FA Cup goal for
Barnsley that knocked Chelsea out of the competition a
couple of years ago, but he shows now signs of prowess
in front of goal here, firing horribly high and wide.
20 mins: Best chance
of the match…and it falls to Supermarine. Wells plays a
beautiful reverse ball on the edge of the box to Chris
Allen who has time to compose himself before he pulls
the trigger. However, the midfielder can only drag his
effort wide when a shock opener beckoned. Let’s hope
they don’t live to regret that too soon.
21 mins: (GOAL
1-0, Mooney) They really don’t deserve to be, but
Colchester are in front. Vincent skins Robinson down the
right and clips across the box, Ian Henderson gets a
flick on and Mooney arrives at the back-post to
side-foot into an empty net. It’s livened the home crowd
up momentarily.
32 mins: Lapham
punts a hopeful long free-kick into the Colchester
18-yard box. The ball takes a deflection off a U’s head
and almost falls to Nick Stanley at the back post, but
it doesn’t
34 mins: Allen and
Henry run into each other on the edge of their own box,
but Mooney’s free-kick is diverted out for a corner.
39 mins: Henderson
has a pop from distance after being laid off by David
Perkins, and his fizzing effort is only just over the
crossbar.
Half-time: The home
crowd boo their players off at the break – sums up how
well Marine have done pretty succinctly.
46 mins: Allen’s
delicate free-kick into the area reaches Henry, who
swings a wild boot but fails to connect.
50 mins: Odejayi and
Vincent link to feed Henderson inside the area at an
acute angle, but the Colchester man can’t direct his
shot at goal.
53 mins: Henderson
has been at the heart of the majority of Colchester’s
forward movement today, and his careering run through
the middle allows Mooney the time and space to shoot
across Puddy from 10 yards out, but the shot drifts
harmlessly wide.
54 mins: Mooney is
hello-bent on grabbing a second and sees his audacious
curled strike from 25 yards easily saved by Puddy, who
has been rock-solid in the Marine goal. Ominously, the
home team are starting to find their feet and are
gathering pace in all they do.
60 mins: Another
massive moment for Supermarine. Gosling is clear through
on goal when he races onto Holgate’s overhead kick. He
cuts inside onto his right and then steps back onto his
left, leaving Reid for dead. The midfielder’s
left-footed effort beats Williams but, agonisingly,
strikes the post and rebounds to safety. So, so close
once again for the visitors, who are playing out of
their skins.
64 mins: Marine come
forward again, with Gosling holding the ball up nicely
20 yards from goal, giving Allen the opportunity to take
a pot-shot with his left foot. In the end the strike is
some way from finding the target, but the intent remains
very much there from the away side.
72 mins: Bitterly
cold in Essex now as Holgate lashes a speculative
long-range strike over the bar.
74 mins: Puddy
spills Vincent’s free-kick, a scramble ensues, but the
ball is cleared by the Marine backline.
79 mins: Henry
manages to get part of a head to a chipped free-kick
from Allen, but there’s no power behind it and it
struggles to reach Williams. Marine are playing really,
really well.
80 mins: Mooney is
at it again, aiming at goal from a narrow angle at the
culmination of a swift U’s counter-attack, but Purdy is
equal to the attempt.
81 mins: Another
superb chance for Marine, as Wells coast through the
Colchester defence to find himself with just Williams to
beat. But the winger’s shot is tame and comfortable for
Williams. The third massive opening for the visitors. Is
it just not to be?
90 mins: Wilson
bursts into the area but shoots straight at Puddy.

A performance to be
proud of By Sam Morshead » Swindon Advertiser
For a policeman, a roofer,
a handful of labourers and an aspiring chef it was a
pretty good day’s work. To be more accurate, it was a
valiant and inspirational performance. For a club that
flirted with extinction less than six months ago, it was
the ultimate day out. And, but for a matter of
nanometers on several occasions, it would have been the
perfect FA Cup upset. The bare facts say Swindon
Supermarine’s FA Cup adventure was ended by Colchester
United on Saturday, but the scoreline only detracts from
events in Essex. All being told, Marine were the more
creative side, the more passionate side, the side who
wouldn’t simply lay down and let their League One hosts
have their own way. David Mooney’s 21st-minute strike
proved to be the decisive blow, but in reality it was
one of only two clear-cut chances created by the U’s as
Marine stood resolute in defence to match their
intrepidness in attack.
The 100-place gap between
the two clubs was well and truly rubbished, so much so
that had any one of Chris Allen, Jamie Gosling or Ben
Wells been marginally more clinical with their golden
sights of goal, it could have been the South Marston
club celebrating a third round date with Swansea City.
Instead, Colchester get the tie in January, but Marine
boss Mark Collier could not fault his players an inch.
“We matched them here today and I couldn't be more proud
of what everyone at the club has achieved,” he said.
“Yes, we had chances. Chris Allen went very close in the
first-half and Jamie Gosling hit the post with a great
effort. But that's cup football. “We can all hold our
heads up high after this. It's been a cup run to
remember and we've gone out battling.”
Only those with a
hopelessly optimistic approach had given Supermarine
more than the most measly of chances of progressing at
the Weston Homes Community Stadium. But the FA Cup lived
up to its reputation as the Swindon outfit held their
own in the opening exchanges against opponents who are
quickly becoming candidates for elevation into the
Championship. As Marine stifled their hosts’ midfield
sparks, Kemal Izzet and David Perkins, so the home crowd
became more and more disillusioned. And that
dissatisfaction expressed itself in the form of boos
when Allen had a glorious chance to give the visitors a
shock lead on 20 minutes. Fed by Wells 12 yards from
goal, the former Swindon Town midfielder found himself
with time and space to take a touch and place his
strike. But, when it looked easier to find the target,
he dragged his shot wide and Colchester punished the
miss immediately.
Breaking quickly down the
right, Ian Henderson whipped a cross in from the by
line, Kayode Odejayi flicked the ball on and Mooney was
well placed to volley home from eight yards out. It was
against the run of play and threatened Marine’s
self-belief. But Collier’s men refused to press the
self-destruct button.
Spearheaded by the lively
pairing of Gosling and Ashan Holgate up front and
bolstered by an exceptional display of strength from
centre-backs Leigh Henry and Dave Bampton, the
non-leaguers didn’t buckle before the break and
practically dominated after. On the hour mark the away
side came agonisingly close to an equaliser. Racing onto
Holgate’s overhead kick on halfway, Gosling jigged
around Paul Reid before firing a left-footed effort
beyond Ben Williams in the Colchester goal, only for the
ball to strike an upright and rebound to safety.
Twenty minutes later Marine
carved the U’s wide open again, this time Wells
embarking on a merry solo run past three defenders
before shooting straight at Williams from close range.
By the time four minutes of injury time were announced
Colchester, seventh in English football’s third tier,
were struggling to hold on. As it was Supermarine
couldn’t find that final killer moment to earn a
lucrative replay at the Webb’s Wood, but the standing
ovation they received from several hundred U’s fans on
the final whistle was testament to their efforts.
“There are a few heads down
in the dressing room right now, but in time we’ll
realise how well we’ve done to get where we have,” said
Collier. “Their goal was at an important moment. We have
a chance at one end and then they’ve gone straight down
the other, it was one moment that won it.
