Gosling goal helps
Marine to victory

Jamie Gosling fired his
first goal for Swindon Supermarine as they saw off local
rivals Cirencester Town 2-1 at the Corinium Stadium on
Bank Holiday Monday. The ex-Yeovil Town man struck in
the second half following Steve Cook’s early opener, and
despite Jody Bevan’s reply, Marine held on for three
points.

The triumph elevated Marine
into the top half of the Southern League Premier
Division for the first time this season and stretched
their run of unbeaten games to three. That statistic
delighted boss Mark Collier, who praised Gosling for his
contribution to yesterday’s victory. “When I spoke to
him before the game, I said his build-up play had been
decent but he needed to come up with an end product and
he did that,” said Collier.
“Ciren is a very difficult
place to come and play football, they put you under an
immense amount of pressure, are very direct and get the
ball forward. “It’s difficult to cope with that but in
the end I think we had enough quality to go and win the
game. The back four and the goalkeeper were excellent
and seven points from the last three games is a good
return.”

Following an open start,
Steve Cook put the visitors ahead after 12 minutes when
he beat ex-Marine stopper Matt Bulman with a stunning
strike that flew into the top left corner from 35 yards.
The remainder of the first
half was relatively even, although Mark Scott made two
fine saves to keep Marine in front. The lead was doubled
in the second half when Sam Morris, Chris Taylor and
substitute Kyle Tooze all combined before Gosling fired
left-footed high into the net and the celebrations
started (pictured above). Cirencester gave themselves
hope when substitute Jody Bevan outmuscled Danny Allen
and drilled past Scott from 20 yards, but the visitors
hung on.

Collier added: “We changed
our system after the first couple of games and at this
moment in time everything is going well. “We started off
the season 4-3-3 and we have now gone 4-4-2 and we know
we can be flexible within that system. “Steve Cook has
done well and Kyle Tooze is very quick as well so we can
change personnel and keep the same formation. It’s a
system we’re comfortable with.” A knee injury curtailed
Cook’s involvement just after half time yesterday and he
is due to see a specialist today, while substitute Matt
Robinson only lasted 15 minutes after coming on for
Danny Allen in the 70th minute, he tweaked his
hamstring.
