Marine leave Romans
ruined
Swindon Supermarine kept
their remarkable FA Cup story going with a late 4-3 win
at Blue Square Premier outfit Bath City. Nick Stanley,
Matt Robinson, Leigh Henry and Kyle Lapham scored the
all-important goals as Marine came from 3-1 down to make
the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time
in their history.
The visitors made the
perfect start after just three minutes when Jamie
Gosling danced away from City skipper Jim Rollo on the
left flank and delivered a delicious in-swinging cross,
which was flicked into the net by the unmarked Stanley.
But the lead lasted just two minutes as ex-Bristol City
man Scott Murray sent in a deep free-kick from the right
flank, and full-back Sido Jombati rose high at the far
post, nodding back across goal and in off the upright
for Bath - whose nickname is the Romans. Holgate might
have made it 2-1 but City stopper Ryan Robinson blocked
with his leg when the ex-Swindon Town man shot from 12
yards out. And Marine were punished for their profligacy
when Adam Connolly won the ball on the right edge of the
area and smashed a speculative strike just inside the
far post.
The task became huge for
the visitors after 33 minutes when Mark Scott did not
reach a loose ball that dropped between him and Lapham,
and Hector Mackie nipped in to nod into the net. But
Mark Collier’s men showed superb guts to haul themselves
back into the game just before the break, with
ex-Portsmouth defender Matt Robinson starting the
comeback as he ghosted in at the near post to power Ben
Wells’ corner home. More poor defending from the hosts
allowed Marine to draw level in the first minute of
stoppage time, as Chris Taylor hit a deep corner and
Henry’s weak header somehow bounced through a crowd of
players and into the net.
Marine began the second
half in a similarly ambitious vein and once again a set
piece caused City problems. Lapham’s header from Wells’
corner seemed destined for the net but he was denied by
a terrific instinctive save. Darren Edwards spurned a
close-range chance for City, but otherwise Marine were
making the better opportunities and Stanley and Gosling
might have given their team the lead.
On 78 minutes a long
clearance saw Alex Russell break through on goal, but
Scott parried his shot and gathered at the second
attempt. With the match seemingly heading for
extra-time, Marine won a corner and Chris Taylor
scampered across to take it. The skipper curled in a
cross to the back post and Lapham’s header deflected off
a defender and down off the crossbar, with the referee
ruling it had crossed the line. City players surrounded
the linesman, who did not seem to award the goal, but
the effort stood and the travelling support were sent
into raptures.
But the drama did not end
there as, with seconds left, Bath were awarded a
free-kick 20 yards out, which Russell curled towards the
top-left corner, only to be denied by a brilliant flying
save from Scott. Moments later the final whistle sounded
and Marine players and coaching staff flooded the pitch
in jubilation at arguably the most important result in
the club’s history.
